Getting Dandruff Under Control

Don’t let your flakes get you down.  Getting your dandruff under control can sometimes be hard but by maintaining a healthy scalp you can manage your itch. Let’s take a look at what causes the trouble on top.

Your scalp is full of microorganisms and keeping the right balance is essential in maintaining a healthy scalp. Dandruff is caused by a group of yeasts under the genus of malassezia and kingdom of fungi.  Fifty percent of the population suffer from dandruff at some stage of their life and, if not taken care of, it can develop into more serious scalp disorders like seborrheic dermatitis, bacterial infections and possibly even hair loss.

Regular washing will keep the overproduction of the malassezia at bay. The common misconception is to not to wash your hair and let natural oils nourish the flakes. This is the wrong thing to do because each hair follicle contains a  sebaceous gland and these  glands secrete oil that protect the skin’s balance, and provide protection from UV and free radicals. Unfortunately, the Malassezias feed on the oil produced by the sebaceous glands, and by not washing your hair the problem gets worse and other organisms could also build up in the oil. Then, if the skin’s outer layer or sebaceous gland gets compromised, there is risk of a bacterial infection which if left untreated may cause scarring alopecia.

To treat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis you must keep the scalp regularly cleansed with a shampoo that contains anti-fungal agents like Zinc Pyrithione, Selenium Sulfide or ketoconazole.  We recommend Goldwell Kerasilk Revitalize Detoxifying shampoo and leave in Detoxifying Serum. If there is extreme flakiness, start with using Goldwell Revitalize Exfoliating Pre Wash.  It provides a deep cleanse of the scalp to remove excessive sebum and dead skin cells.

Controlling the skin’s microbiome with natural products like Activance Professional may also help. For specific recommendations including dosage frequency book a consultation with Emma Bayly WTS, a certified trichologist. In severe cases, or if a secondary bacterial infection is present, a prescription of corticosteroids prescribed by your doctor may be needed.

If you are prone to dandruff, maintain your scalp’s natural microbiome with Activance Alleviate daily. Pay attention to your triggers such as stress & diet. Alter these if needed and aim for a healthy lifestyle and diet. Apotecari Bioactive Haircare offers you Crowning Glory– it promotes a healthy scalp – the root of healthy hair

Otherwise, visit our Scalp Spa for a Kerasilk Revitalize in-salon treatment. This is an excellent reset for your scalp. After your consultation, you’ll relax with a thorough exfoliation, re-balance, and finish with a Nourishing or Detoxifying treatment.
